Gindaiko (崟太鼓) was founded by Jeffrey Teo in 2004. Possessed with a deep passion for Taiko drumming, Jeffrey embarked on a quest to learn the art from the masters in Japan, long before the art was well known in Singapore.

In 1996, Jeffrey managed to land a three month attachment with the prestigious Osuwa Daiko ensemble in Nagano Japan. During this time, he had the privilege of training under Grand Master Oguchi Daihachi sensei (February 27, 1924 - June 27, 2008), the founder of Osuwa Daiko.

Grand Master Oguchi Daihachi was considered a “living cultural treasure” and was acknowledged to have created the modern kumi-daiko (ensemble taiko) style of playing before his tragic and untimely death in 2008. His reputation lives on even today in drumming circles around the world and his legacy continues with the Osuwa Daiko ensemble. The group performed at the opening ceremony of the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan.

Not satisfied with just learning how to play the Taiko drum, Jeffrey’s love and passion for Taiko even led him to learn how to make Taiko drums. Today, with his tremendous wealth of experience gained over decades of training, discipline and perfecting his skills, Jeffrey is focused on spreading the joy and passion of Taiko drumming through classes, workshops and performances in Singapore. Jeffrey continues to play regularly with a local group of Taiko enthusiasts and is the leader of the GinDaiko ensemble.
